UX Design, Wearable Technology Design, Inclusive Design

A design concept of software that connects to wearable technology to help users with low vision.

Lumen is a visual AI assistive software that connects to wearable technology such as watches and earpieces to aid individuals on the low vision spectrum ranging from those who find difficulty in specific situations to those with a generally low field of vision and those who are legally blind. With this, we focused on three main tasks that users may find challenging to navigate by utilizing AI technology and various sensors to analyze and describe the user environment.

Core Issues & Solutions

Bridge the Gap of Uncertainty

Our goal was to create an AI virtual and audible assistant that primarily works on a smartwatch with the addition of specifically designed headphones for further accuracy and discreet audio. The intention was to help the user when needed. Not all low-vision users have the same field of vision, and our goal is to create an AI that learns the user’s needs and preferences and adapts to their situation, providing suggestions and accommodations that adapt to the user’s environment.

Goals

Designing a UI that fits the user’s needs

We wanted to create a UI that was quite different than one might typically see. With this, we prioritized high contrast, large, visually different icons, specific colour formations, and minimal text. Furthermore, not all users will see the visual UI of the product, making the use of region memorization a significant challenge in creating the UI.
